If you have a broken tooth, CEREC technology offers a single-day replacement. CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) crowns are painless, convenient, and beautiful missing tooth replacements. These ceramic restorations have exploded in popularity over the years. And it is no surprise. The benefits of CEREC crowns are endless!
How are CEREC Crowns made?
The process starts with a digital impression. Our dentists will slowly glide a 3D camera over your teeth, creating a full-color, 3D model of your smile.
Then, using CAD/CAM software on our computers, our dentists design your CEREC crown. With complete control over the shape, size, and color of your crown, they can ensure its natural look and feel.
Next, we use an in-house milling machine to craft the restoration out of a ceramic block. Within hours, you’ll have a natural-looking, color-matched restoration that our team will then bond to your broken tooth. You’ll be out running errands, chatting with friends, and smiling in no time!
Now that we understand how these crowns are made, let’s break down the benefits of CEREC Crowns.
Precision
Before the evolution of CEREC, we used messy, gooey molds that were less-than-accurate. All we had to work with was an impression made out of putty. Now, the digital images we take with our 3D camera capture all of the detailed angles of your teeth and gums, resulting in highly accurate scans that help us determine the size and shape your crown should be.
You also have more say in the design of your crown. Before, we’d have to send impressions to a lab. Now, you can watch the design of your crown right in front of your eyes.
No Temporaries
One of the most cited benefits of CEREC crowns is their quick turnaround time. Before same-day crowns, we sent impressions to an off-site lab. It would take weeks to make the crown and send it back to our office. During this time, we’d send patients away with a temporary crown.
Because they’re removable, temporaries often fit loosely, make eating difficult, and sometimes fall out before a permanent restoration is placed. With CEREC crowns, you have a more permanent, comfortable, and durable crown within hours.
Long-Lasting & Durable
Ceramic is a very durable material! Research shows crowns can better resist abrasion or breakage compared to other restorations. However, you should still maintain good oral health to ensure the longevity of your restoration. Continue brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily to keep plaque or bacteria from damaging the tooth beneath your crown.
Typically, if you follow good oral care routines, crowns can last for 15 years or longer.
Natural Look & Feel
Even your closest loved ones may not realize you’re wearing a crown! Our dentists have complete control over the color, shade, and fit of your restoration, so we can craft a crown that matches what your original tooth looked like before it was damaged. Porcelain most closely resembles the look and feel of natural teeth, which is why we encourage our patients to opt for porcelain restorations. Porcelain crowns also lack a metal core, so the restoration looks natural instead of dark or metallic.
