What is Sedation Dentistry?

Anti-Anxiety dentistry, or sedation dentistry, refers to the use of a sedative during dental treatment. Endorsed by the American Dental Association, this method is ideal for patients with dental fear or patients who may find it hard to sit still. Under sedation, most dental care can be completed in as little as one appointment.

Our dentists here at Center Valley Dental are specially trained in sedation dentistry. There are two methods we practice: oral sedation and inhalation conscious sedation.

Oral Sedation

With oral sedation, our doctors give you a pill before your appointment. This pill will relax you and make you feel completely comfortable.

Inhalation Conscious Sedation

Inhalation conscious sedation uses laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, to help you relax and fall asleep during your procedure. All bodily functions remain normal and you can breathe on your own.

What dental procedures can be done under sedation?

  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Root canals
  • Extractions
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Periodontal treatments

Before using a sedative or anesthetic, it is important to tell your dentist about any medications or medical treatments you are receiving. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, your dentist will talk to you about the process of sedation and pre- and post-sedation instructions.
